Summary
This course is aimed at staff who would be expected to move and handle people as part of their work role, or participate with others in the moving and handling when necessary.
Aims
This course will include theoretical aspects as well as practical participation of manual handling tasks, such as sit to stand transfers, using hoists and other manual handling equipment. It will also include dealing with emergency handling situations.
Objectives
To include:
- Power point presentation of theoretical aspects of moving & handling
- Legislation, roles and responsibilities around manual handling. Including recognising poor practice.
- The bariatric patient
- Risk Assessment of handling situations
- Safe physical principles of handling
- Moving inanimate loads
- Practical skills in standing transfers and mobilising patient
- Patient falls
- Emergency handling
- Using manual handling equipment
- Repositioning of patients in the bed (using slide sheets) for pressure relief and end of life care
- Use of hoisting equipment

Simulation experience (Minimum of 2 delegates)
Using the Gert simulation suit, you will be able to experience some of the symptoms and effects of:
- Fraility/old age.
- Dementia
- Parkinsons
- COPD
- Tinitus
- Eye conditions, restricting sight
- Stroke
- Back Pain/knee pain, kyphosis
This will help you with your own practice when dealing with people who experience these symptoms and conditions.
This practical workshop is designed to give practical solutions, through experiential learning to moving and handling/daily living tasks
