Summary
This three-hour training session supports practitioners with preparing and recording their mental capacity assessments, drawing upon case examples, case law and contemporary theories. It also delves into the critical area of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) to ensure that the human rights of all patients are preserved and protected. The course will cover the basics of DoLS and the legislation behind it, to promote successful decision making with careful consideration of an individual’s choice and best interests.
Objectives
- To understand what decision is required, how it will be assessed and what the threshold for evidence will be.
- To understand different types of capacity, including fluctuating capacity
- To define DoLS
- To identify Deprivation
- To look at DoLS and the 5 key principles of the MCA
- To learn when it is necessary to authorise deprivation.
- To understand the record keeping process
