Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people communicate, process information and interact with the world. Approximately 1 in 100 people are autistic. This workshop aims to raise awareness of autism so you can better understand more about your responsibilities and how to assist those on the autistic spectrum.
Autism can feel difficult or complex to understand. Everyone is very different and has their own abilities, strengths and needs. It can, therefore, feel very overwhelming when we try to work out the best ways to support an autistic individual. By understanding how an autistic individual may experience communication, thought processing and the sensory input around them, you will be in a more informed place to identify helpful methods of support.
The workshop covers why you need to know about autism, what autism is, key terms, key legislation, and some techniques for helping an individual with autism. We will also briefly look at the wider spectrum of neuro divergent conditions.
The term neurodiversity refers to the range of variation in individual brain function as a part of normal difference in the human population. Neurodiversity is most often linked to autism spectrum disorders, and commonly co-occuring neurodevelopment disorders such as ADHD, dyspraxia and dyslexia, but has also been used to refer to other conditions such as bi-polar and schizophrenia.
