Resuscitation Officer Andy Field – a current member of the Royal Naval Reserves – has introduced a training workshop specifically on controlling bleeding with direct pressure on the wound and as a last resort, the use of military-style Combat Application Tourniquets.

The aim of the course is to teach clinical staff how to control major bleeding by using compression bandages, dressings and direct pressure.

The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) is a small and lightweight one-handed tourniquet that completely occludes arterial blood flow of an extremity in the event of a traumatic wound with significant haemorrhage.

The course is designed and delivered in line with the Trauma and Resuscitation Council (UK) 2015 guidelines.

Andy has worked with Livewell Southwest CIC for the last seven years, delivering Adult and Paediatric Basic Life Support training, Anaphylaxis training, Immediate Life Support, Recognition of Acute Physical Illness and Deterioration (RAPID), ECG training, Sepsis training, First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid.

Prior to joining Livewell Southwest Andy completed 27 years’ service in the Royal Navy.
